Explocation – Expedition Preparation Guide

  1. Clothing & Footwear (Layering System)

For the Llanos & Jungle (Heat & Humidity):

  • Technical Shirts: Long-sleeved, lightweight, and quick-drying fabrics (e.g., Dry-Fit or polyamide) in neutral colours (khaki, olive green, grey). Avoid bright colours as they may startle the birds.
  • Expedition Trousers: Lightweight, preferably convertible (zip-offs), to protect against insects and thorny vegetation.
  • Headwear: A wide-brimmed hat to protect your neck and face from the intense savannah sun.
  • For the Andes (Mountain Cold):
  • Base Layer (Thermal): Thermal top and leggings for the chilly nights in the high páramo.
  • Mid-Layer: A fleece jacket or a lightweight down jacket.
  • Outer Layer: A high-quality windbreaker or waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or similar).
  • Footwear:
  • Hiking Boots: Waterproof with excellent grip (ensure they are well broken-in before the trip).
  • Lightweight Shoes: Hiking sandals or trainers for relaxing at the lodges.
  • Socks: Merino wool or synthetic blends (avoid cotton to prevent blisters).
  1. Observation & Optical Gear

Binoculars (Essential): 8×42 or 10×42 are highly recommended for better light intake in the dense cloud forest.

  • Camera Equipment: Lenses with long focal lengths (300mm to 600mm) and spare batteries.
  • Memory Cards: High-capacity cards (you will be taking hundreds of photos).
  • Field Guide: We recommend Birds of Venezuela (Hilty) or the Merlin Bird ID App with the Venezuela pack pre-installed.
  1. Field Accessories

Daypack: A 20–30 litre backpack for carrying water, snacks, and extra layers.

  • Sun Protection: Broad-spectrum sunscreen (biodegradable) and UV-protection lip balm.
  • Insect Repellent: Containing DEET or Picaridin, especially vital for the Llanos region.
  • Headlamp: With extra batteries (essential for the nocturnal feline tracking expedition).
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Minimum 1.5 litres (e.g., Nalgene or Camelbak).
  1. Health & Miscellaneous
  • Rain Cover or Poncho: Sudden downpours are common in the Henri Pittier cloud forest.
  • Personal Toiletries: Including wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
  • Personal Medication: Any regular prescriptions, plus a basic kit of painkillers and antihistamines.
  • Dry Bags: To protect your camera gear and documents during boat trips in the Llanos.

Explocation Tip:

«Pack light, but pack smart. The temperature difference between Hato El Cedral and the Santo Domingo Páramo can exceed 25°C. Layering is your best ally!»
